Abstract

Acute liver injury (ALI) is a life-threatening medical emergency which involves multiple organ systems. The synthetic, metabolic and excretory functions of the liver are severely impaired in ALI. ALI is defined as a rapid development of ALI with encephalopathy in patients who previously had normal liver functions. Drug-induced hepatotoxicity or druginduced liver injury (DILI) is an acute or chronic response to a natural or manufactured compound. In the US, it is the leading cause of acute liver failure episodes (13-16%). The
development of these disorders reflects complex pathological processes in which the oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) play pivotal roles. Alpha lipoic acid (ALA), which plays an essential role as an antioxidant has drawn considerable attention for use in managing liver disorders.
