Efficacy of Some Medicinal Plants Used as Antidiabetic Plants in Jordan: A Review
Main Article Content
Abstract
Medicinal plants play a vital role in complementary and alternative treatments for non-
communicable diseases, including diabetes mellitus. In Jordan, extensive research by
phytochemists and botanists has documented the use of herbal medicine, particularly in rural areas
where it remains a primary form of treatment. Limited access to safe, effective, and affordable
pharmaceutical options often drives the reliance on herbal remedies in underdeveloped regions.
Similarly, in developed nations, concerns over side effects of synthetic pharmaceuticals have
increased the interest in natural treatment option for chronic illnesses. Ethnopharmacological
studies in Jordan have assessed the effectiveness of various plants in managing specific conditions,
particularly diabetes. Diabetes mellitus, known for its complications leading to morbidity and
mortality, has prompted many patients in Jordan to employ medicinal plants for the treatment of
this disease. Diabetic patients especially those in rural communities rely on the use of certain herbs
with hypoglycemic properties for the management of their condition. as supported by local
herbalists and researchers. Jordan is faced with an alarming rise in prevalence of diabetes,
necessitating proactive healthcare strategies that is focused on management and prevention.
Addressing this challenge requires the integration of herbal medicine into conventional healthcare
to mitigate the burden of diabetes mellitus.
